This isnt your grandmothers pressure cookerwell kind of but its safer, quieter, and infinitely easier to operate! Instant pots are countertop pressure cookers that can do everything from hard boil eggs to making yogurt, and cooking a whole rack of ribs in an no time at all!

Lets Make Instant Pot Rice!

Wild rice, basmati, long-grain brown rice, jasmine rice, and plain old white rice are a cinch to make in the instant pot and most models will have automatic settings for a perfect result every time!

  1. Rinse rice, making sure there are no small pebbles or debris. Rinsing the rice removes starches from the outside so your rice isnt sticky. Add rice and water to the Instant Pot.
  2. Cook on high pressure for the times mentioned below (or manufacturers instructions for that particular model).
  3. Allow to naturally release for 15 minutes. Do not release early or your rice may not be cooked.

Rice to Water Ratio

The rice to water ratio in an Instant Pot is not the same as it is for stove top or what it shows on the package of rice. There is little evaporation in the IP so you need less water.

For white rice in the Instant Pot, most recipes call for a 1:1 ratio but I do find the rice needs just a tiny bit more in my IP so I add 1 cup rice, 1 cup water plus a couple of tablespoons and it comes out perfectly every time.

Brown rice, wild rice and other varieties need a bit more water than white rice.

How Long Does it Cook For?

Most instant pots have an automatic setting for making rice but it should only be used for white rice.

In a 6QT Instant Pot

  • Long Grain White Rice: 4-6 minutes on high pressure + 15 minute natural release
  • Brown Rice: 22-25 minutes on high pressure + 15 minute natural release (brown rice needs more water than white rice, add 1 cup rice, 1 1/3 cup water)
  • Wild Rice (not a blend): 30 minutes on high pressure + 15 minute natural release (wild rice needs more water than white rice. Add 1 cup rice and 1 2/3 cup water )

Natural release just means that when its done cooking, leave the Instant Pot undisturbed (do not open the lid) and the pressure will naturally begin to release. At the end of the 15 minutes natural release, you can manually release any remaining pressure (by opening the valve, this can vary depending on your model) although there should be very little pressure left.

How to Store Leftover Rice

Make sure the liquid is drained from rice and fluff with a for before storing in the fridge or freezer.

  • To store keep rice in an air-tight container and it will keep about a week.
  • To refresh, fluff with a fork and reheat in the microwave or on the stovetop with a little bit of water.
  • To freeze, scoop into zippered bags, label with the date and lay flat on the bottom of the freezer. Once fully frozen, store stacked upright to save space.
