We use every excuse to add roasted garlic to food! Mostly though, we love to add it to bread. Roasted garlic is fab in our Every Day No Knead Sourdough Bread, our Easy Focaccia Bread, and this Braided Rosemary Garlic Rye.

No oven? No problem! Keep reading as we teach you how to roast garlic SEVEN ways. Be sure to reserve the oil the garlic cooks in. It’s terrific drizzled on pizza, in salad dressing, brushed on sliced bread to make crostini, or just spooned over scrambled eggs in the morning.

How To Roast Garlic In The Oven (3 Ways)

Whole Bulb Of Garlic In The Oven

Preheat the oven to 350ºF (180ºC). Slice the top off of a bulb of garlic, just enough to expose the cloves inside.

Place bulb on a small piece of aluminum foil. Drizzle the exposed cloves with olive oil, and wrap the whole bulb tightly in foil.

  • Hands wrapping a whole bulb of garlic in foil.

Place bulb in a small oven-safe dish or ramekin and roast the garlic for about 40 minutes. Remove the garlic from the oven and let it cool. Unwrap the bulb and squeeze the roasted garlic cloves into a small dish. Use as needed.

A glass dish of raw garlic cloves.

Cover the cloves with olive oil. Place the dish in the oven and roast the garlic for about 40 minutes. Cool completely on a wire rack before using. Reserve both roasted cloves and garlic oil and use as needed.

4 More Ways To Roast Garlic

In The Air Fryer

Follow the same method as roasting a whole bulb in the oven. Slice the top of the bulb, drizzle it with olive oil and wrap it in aluminium foil.

Hands wrapping garlic in foil.

Place the wrapped bulb in the basket of an air fryer and roast until soft and fragrant. For full instructions, see Kelly’s post called Air Fryer Roasted Garlic.

Roast Individual Cloves In The Slow Cooker

Follow the same instructions as roasting individual cloves in the oven. Place peeled and trimmed cloves in a slow cooker (smaller ones work best). Cover the cloves in olive oil and cook on low until the garlic is dark gold and fragrant, about 2 to 3 hours.

Cook Individual Cloves On The Stove Top

Place peeled and trimmed garlic cloves in a small pot. Cover the cloves in garlic oil and cook them on low heat on the stove top. The oil should bubble gently around the cloves but not spit. If the oil is hissing and spitting, reduce the heat.

The garlic is done when the cloves are deep gold in colour and fragrant, about 30 to 40 minutes. Use the roasted cloves and garlic oil in recipes as needed.

Cook Chopped Garlic In Olive Oil In The Microwave

Peel and trim raw garlic cloves. Chop them fine and place them in small microwavable ceramic dish (NOT plastic or metal). Cover the chopped garlic with olive oil and microwave it in 30 second bursts until golden and fragrant.
