Air Fried Buffalo Chicken Wings

Posted by admin on

Chicken wings that are air fried into the crispiest wings you will ever had! Completely smothered in homemade Buffalo sauce, you won’t go back to your bar for them. The best part is that these wings are done in less than 20 minutes. The air fryer is an appliance that basically takes cooking to another level that is an easier and faster method for everything. These air fryer chicken wings not only take a fraction of the time of baking, but get so crispy you’ll think they are fried.

I guarantee you that you will always and forever air fry your chicken wings. It takes less time than baking, gets crispy faster, and it’s healthier than actually frying them, which uses so much canola/vegetable oil that has grease and fat in it. It also takes no time at all to make your own buffalo sauce. Make the sauce while air-frying the wings so it can all be ready at the same time. Homemade Buffalo sauce just tastes so much better than the bottled stuff. You also know what’s in your homemade sauce as compared to the bottled sauce that has 15-20 ingredients, some of them unpronounceable.

Can I bake wings if I don’t own an Air-Fryer?

You can, but it takes longer. I highly recommend you get an air-fryer if you don’t have one. It’s so useful. Preheat your oven to 400 degrees and place the wings on a single layer on a baking sheet (place on an oven rack on top of the baking sheet to get crispier). Bake for 30 minutes, then flip and cook another 15-30 minutes depending on desired crispiness.

What to serve with Chicken Wings:

  • Serve with your favorite dips such as Ranch Dressing, Blue Cheese Dressing, or Homemade Mayochup
  • Use the air fryer to make frozen French fries (or homemade) or tater tots to serve alongside the wings!
  • A hearty scoop of Creamy Mac and Cheese also goes VERY WELL alongside these spicy chicken wings!
  • Make a Simple Wedge Salad to go with the wings!
  • Serve with just celery and carrots, and don’t forget the dip!

What’s in Buffalo Sauce?

Traditional Buffalo sauce is comprised of a cayenne pepper sauce (I used Frank’s Red Hot), butter, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce and spice. Of course, there’s some recipes out there of Buffalo sauce that are more complex, but this recipe is easier to make and simple with few ingredients. The butter will balance out the spice, and along with the vinegar and Worcestershire sauce it creates a unique taste different from just hot sauce. It is creamy and delicious. Making homemade buffalo sauce at home means you can make it fresh and adjust the heat to your liking. However, if you want a sweeter buffalo sauce, add a few teaspoons of honey at a time.

What else can this sauce be used for?

There’s so many uses for this sauce. Whether it be for dipping or to coat, you can use it for:

  • Popcorn
  • Pulled Pork
  • Potatoes (smashed, mashed, roasted, anything!)
  • Burgers
  • Chicken Fingers/Nuggets
  • Salad (No, it’s not bad!)
  • Eggs
  • Burritos
  • Grilled Cheese
  • The list is endless!

Storing Buffalo Sauce

This sauce only gets better with time. I like making it in small batches but making a large batch is just as good. It will keep. Keep in a tightly sealed container. I like to use a jar with a screw top lid. Keep in the fridge for up to a month. Shake well before each use. If you want to warm it up, only take out what you will need and warm up in the microwave.

Air-Fried Buffalo Chicken Wings

Chicken wings that are air-fried into the crispiest wings you will ever have! Completely smothered in homemade Buffalo sauce, you won’t go back to your bar for them. Done in less than 20 minutes, these air fryer chicken wings not only take a fraction of the time of baking but get so crispy you’ll think they are fried.

Ingredients

For the Wings
  • 2 lbs chicken wings (drums and flats) (*1)
  • 1 1/2 tbsp olive oil
  • 2 tsp garlic powder
  • 2 tsp onion powder
  • 2 tsp paprika
  • 2 tsp salt
  • 1 tsp black pepper
For the Buffalo Sauce
  • 1 cup Frank’s red hot sauce, or any cayenne pepper sauce
  • 1/2 cup unsalted butter
  • 2 tbsp white vinegar
  • 1/2 tsp Worcestershire sauce
  • 1/4 tsp cayenne pepper
  • 1/2 tsp garlic powder
  • 1/4 tsp paprika

Instructions

For the Wings
  1. Prep the chicken wings. If the wings are full wings, separate them into drums and flats. Make sure they are defrosted. Pat them completely dry. This will help them get crispy.
  2. Place the wings into a bowl and drizzle the olive oil over them. Toss to coat. Add the garlic powder, onion powder, paprika, salt, and pepper. Toss to completely coat the wings.
  3. Preheat the air fryer at 400F for 2 minutes. Add wings in a single layer to the air fryer, being sure they aren’t touching, and cook for 10 minutes at 400F.
  4. After the timer goes off, open the air fryer and carefully flip over the chicken wings. Cook for 8 more minutes. Remove the chicken wings, toss in the Buffalo Sauce and serve.
For the Buffalo Sauce
  1. In a saucepan over medium heat, combine the hot sauce, butter, vinegar, Worcestershire sauce, pepper, garlic powder, and paprika. Whisk often so the butter melts completely, then let the mixture come to a simmer, about 15 minutes.
  2. Once the sauce comes to a simmer, remove the pan from the heat. Allow the sauce to cool slightly. Add a dash or two of salt, to taste.
  3. The sauce will thicken as it cools. Whisk the sauce before serving over wings.
  4. This recipe will make extra for dipping or for storing.

Notes:

(*1) If the wings are frozen, defrost them. If they are full wings, separate them into drums and flats.
